Having a new baby is such an exciting time. It can also be exhausing and overwhelming. I'm here to tell you that you can have a successful in-home newborn photo session with just a little preparation. Skip the overwhelm and exhaustion! Here are five must-have items that will help ensure everything goes smoothly.
1. Burp Cloth
Be ready for any unexpected spit-ups or messes during the session.
2. Pacifier
Helps in calming the baby, making them more comfortable for posing. I know everyone may not use a pacifier. I refused to use one for my first child but now I've learned they will not be confused in a short time but it can be helpful to sooth as baby is being moved around and not in a deep sleep.
3. Soft Blanket
Provide a cozy and safe space for the baby especially if they need to be warm. I have swaddles and am more than happy to bring some if you let me know ahead of time.
4. Books for Siblings
Books help engage older siblings during the session.
Keeps them occupied and happy while you focus on the newborn.
5. Bottle or Nursing Readiness
Ensures the baby is well-fed and content.
Be prepared to feed on-demand to avoid fussiness especially as baby will be passed around and not in a deep sleep.
Now let's prepare for the best experience! Organize all essential items before the session. Make sure baby has had a FULL feed. One clue I always like to follow is if their hands are open and relaxed then they are full. If baby falls asleep during a feed and their fists are still closed you will need to wake them so they finish the feed. Simple preparations lead to beautiful memories captured through photography.
